Bouzi is a sandy beach located in the Larnaca district of Cyprus, measuring 1,270 metres in length. The beach is relatively narrow and characterized by sandy material interspersed with small to medium-sized pebbles arranged in strips due to winter wave action. The shoreline zone has a natural character with a sandy bottom mixed occasionally with pebbles, and rocky formations appear at greater depths in the northern section. The beach can accommodate a maximum of 450 daily swimmers.

Water

The bathing water is part of the Yiyi-Cape Kiti water body (CY_18-C2) within the Cyprus river basin district (major hydrological basin 8). Average water depth is 0.7 metres, with a maximum depth of 2 metres. The beach length is 1,270 metres. Mean annual runoff in the basin ranges from 120 l/sec in February to 0 l/sec in August. Mean surface precipitation is 415.8 mm annually.

Location

Bouzi is situated in the Larnaca district, in the Mazotou community, Cyprus. The monitoring point is located at coordinates 33.5187°E, 34.7956°N (ETRS89). The beach is positioned at a point where the shore is wide and easily accessible, representing where the main volume of swimmers typically congregates.

Facilities

Waste collection bins are available. The Mazotou Community Council is responsible for beach cleaning. No other specific facilities are mentioned.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The bathing water has been monitored since 2008. The adjoining coastal water body maintains good ecological status.

Risks

A moderate degree of risk exists for the development of macroalgae and phytoplankton due to identified pollution sources. The Pouzes River, which discharges approximately 250 metres north of the beach, is a potential pollution source. Agricultural runoff and percolation from the 55.94 km² inland influence zone constitute probable pollution sources. Septic tanks from isolated houses in the wider area present a potential pollution source. Short-term pollution risk is low, with only one recorded incident from 2008 to 2010 (attributed to a passing vessel on 15 June 2010). Probable sources of short-term pollution include passing and moored vessels and malfunction of sewage systems from coastal developments.
