Cyprus Coastal 1 - Excellent

An extensive natural beach located to the east of Larnaca Airport, composed of sandy material mixed with small pebbles. The beach stretches for 1,900 metres and is situated within the Natura 2000 network SPA and SCI area (Larnaca Salt Lakes). The natural shoreline features a sandy seabed with small pebbles, and small pockets of Posidonia oceanica seagrass are found in certain areas of the shallow zone.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Beach length: 1,900 metres. Average water depth: 0.6 metres. Maximum water depth: 2 metres. Sandy and pebble seabed with scattered Posidonia oceanica meadows.

Location

Located east of Larnaca Airport in the Larnaca district, Cyprus. A road runs along the length of the beach. The monitoring point is positioned at coordinates 33.6395°E, 34.8672°N.

Facilities

Toilets available at the Kition camping area. Waste collection bins present. Beach cleaning is the responsibility of Larnaca Municipality. Maximum daily bather capacity: 200. Water sports services are not offered.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal water body is in good ecological status. The area has been monitored for many years, with formal monitoring reports produced since Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004.

Risks

Low risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication. Small risk of short-term pollution events, with potential sources including dysfunction of the Larnaca wastewater treatment plant and various anthropogenic pressures from the airport, treated wastewater tanks, and desalination facility. Short-term pollution events occur approximately once per swimming season and typically last 1–2 days.
