Buarcos is a Type I beach located on the mesotidal exposed Atlantic coast north of the Rio Mondego mouth. It is part of the water body CWB-I-3 and is surrounded by a consolidated urban core with strong seasonal demand. The beach benefits from infrastructure, equipment, and various services, with high human occupation during the summer season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09. No short-term pollution episodes occurred in the 2024 bathing season. Zero days of bathing prohibition or discouragement due to short-term pollution events in 2024.

Risks

Diffuse sources of fecal contamination from surface waters flowing north of the bathing area, solid waste from beach activities, ocean trash, bird colonies, and high user numbers. Macroalgae proliferation is very likely; phytoplankton proliferation is likely; cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely.
