Byens mose is a stony beach approximately 100 metres long and 10 metres wide located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach features dense vegetation behind the stones, including grass and roses, with stone breakwaters spaced every 10 metres. It is a pronounced boat beach with numerous boat landings along the shore. The seabed is rocky for the first two metres and becomes sandier beyond. Large quantities of macroalgae are present on the beach.

Water

Coastal water body. The beach is approximately 100 metres long and 10 metres wide. The seabed is stony for the first two metres, then becomes sandy. Current flows predominantly in an easterly direction.

Location

The beach is located along Kystvejen in Kalundborg. Parking is available on the opposite side of the road near the moss area. The immediate hinterland includes the moss and the town.

Season

Monitoring occurs a minimum of 4 times per year. The classification section is reviewed annually in November after the bathing season ends.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. This classification is based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018–2021 according to EU bathing water directive rules. Sources of faecal pollution include a stream and Sdr. Nyrup treatment plant. The outlets are considered a risk due to the dominant eastward current direction. Discharge occurs far offshore via a sea pipeline, and overflow at Nyrup treatment plant is very rare. Short-term pollution is usually caused by heavy rainfall leading to treatment plant overflow, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall stops.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea upon contact, particularly affecting children and immunocompromised individuals. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) in the beach zone may pose a health risk by promoting bacterial growth and prolonging the survival of faecal bacteria. Signs of algae include foam at the water's edge, water discoloration, and possibly dead animals. Short-term pollution from treatment plant overflow can occur after heavy rainfall. Other occasional pollutants include broken glass, litter, and chemical contamination.
