Kysttoften is a bathing beach located along Kystvejen in Kalundborg, Denmark. The bathing area features a bathing pier with approximately 5 metres of stony beach on each side. The beach is approximately 15 metres wide and consists of stones, with a 5-metre-wide belt of roses and grasses behind it. At the end of the bathing pier, there is a sandy bottom, but elsewhere the water's edge has stones. The beach has been classified as Excellent based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018–2021.

Water

Coastal bathing area. The main current direction is east and southeast. The water bottom consists of sand at the end of the bathing pier; elsewhere stones are present at the water's edge.

Location

Located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark, along Kystvejen. A small car park with capacity for 3 vehicles is available. Kalundborg town is located in the hinterland and adjacent land.

Bathing pier, car park with 3 spaces, information boards for warnings about pollution and algal blooms, signage for water quality warnings.

Season

Monitoring is conducted throughout the year, with at least 4 sampling occasions per year. The classification section is reviewed annually in November after the bathing season ends.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as Excellent based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018–2021 according to EU bathing water directive rules. Monitoring is conducted at least 4 times per year.

Risks

Short-term pollution can occur due to heavy rainfall causing overflow at Sdr. Nyrup treatment plant, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall stops. Risk is minimal despite the eastward current direction because discharge occurs far out in the bay via a sea outfall and overflows at Sdr. Nyrup treatment plant are very rare. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms cannot be reliably predicted. Large quantities of seaweed (macroalgae) may accumulate at the shoreline, presenting a health risk to humans and animals. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution may occasionally occur.
