Kystbakken

Kystbakken is a bathing water located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The bathing area features a bathing pier with approximately 10 meters of stony beach on each side, enclosed by two breakwaters made of large stones. The beach is approximately 15 meters wide and consists of stones with sparse vegetation, backed by a five-meter-wide belt of roses and grasses. The water has a sandy bottom at the end of the pier but is predominantly stony at the water's edge.

Water

Coastal bathing water with a bathing pier. The seabed consists of sand at the pier's end and stones at the water's edge. Main current direction is toward the east and southeast.

Location

Located in Kalundborg, Denmark, along Kystvejen (Coast Road). A small parking area with space for 3 vehicles is available near the beach. Kalundborg town is situated in the hinterland.

Facilities

Bathing pier available. Information boards are present at the beach for warnings. No specific mention of lifeguards, toilets, showers, or disabled access facilities.

Season

Monitoring is carried out a minimum of 4 times per year. The classification section is reviewed annually in November following the end of the bathing season.

Water Quality

Classified as EXCELLENT based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018-2021. Water discharge from Sdr. Nyrup Treatment Plant is a source of potential faecal pollution. Short-term pollution typically results from heavy rainfall causing treatment plant overflow, usually lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall stops. Risk of short-term pollution is assessed as minimal despite eastward current direction, as discharge occurs far into the bay via a sea outfall and overflow at the treatment plant is very rare.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms that can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea in humans and potentially fatal effects in animals. Risk of large quantities of seaweed (macroalgae) at the shoreline, which can harbour bacteria and extend the survival of faecal bacteria. Other occasional pollution includes glass shards, waste, and chemical contamination. Short-term pollution from treatment plant overflow is rare but possible after heavy rainfall.
