Gisseløre Badebro is a bathing beach approximately 150 metres long and 15 metres wide, located near Kalundborg in Denmark. It is a pebble beach with scattered vegetation and stone breakwaters. The beach has stones extending 1.5 metres into the water, after which the seabed becomes sandy. A small wooded area with benches, toilets, and trees is situated behind the beach. Water quality measurements from 2018–2021 classify the bathing water as Excellent.

Water

Coastal bathing area in the Baltic Sea region. The beach is approximately 150 metres long and 15 metres wide. The seabed consists of stones for the first 1.5 metres from the shore, followed by sand. The predominant water current direction is north-easterly.

Location

Gisseløre Badebro is located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. Radiovej leads to the beach and terminates at a large car park near a restaurant. The beach is adjacent to the restaurant, with a sports field located behind it.

Toilet, information board, life ring, benches, small wooded area with trees.

Season

Monitoring occurs at least 4 times per year. The classification section is revised annually in November following the end of the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Excellent based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements from 2018–2021. The main source of potential faecal pollution is Sdr. Nyrup Treatment Plant. Short-term pollution typically results from heavy rainfall causing treatment plant overflow, lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall ceases. The risk is assessed as minimal despite the eastward current direction, as discharge occurs far out in the bay via a submarine pipeline and overflow at Sdr. Nyrup Treatment Plant is very rare.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, which can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation at the beach edge, which can pose health risks and prolong the survival of faecal bacteria. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution may occasionally occur. Short-term pollution from heavy rainfall can cause treatment plant overflow.
