Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Isolino-Fondotoce is a sandy beach with a gentle slope located within the Fondotoce natural reserve on Lake Maggiore. The beach extends 619 metres and reaches the mouth of the Toce River. The bathing area is situated within an extra-hotel facility at an elevation of 197 metres above sea level.

Location

Located in Verbania, in the Verbano Cusio Ossola province, Piedmont region. The bathing area is part of the Fondotoce natural reserve and extends to the Toce River mouth.

Facilities

Supermarket, bar, swimming pool, tobacconist, and newsagent. Restaurant, internet point, and wireless internet. April to September: daytime entertainment and medical services. Playground, sports field, table tennis tables, windsurfing rental, pedalo, canoe and bicycle rental. Animals permitted on leash.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: EXCELLENT. Based on 18 routine samples from 2020–2023. Escherichia coli at 90th percentile: 14.6 MPN/100 ml, at 95th percentile: 24.3 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci at 90th percentile: 26.7 MPN/100 ml, at 95th percentile: 44.8 MPN/100 ml. A wastewater treatment plant is located approximately 7 kilometres from the monitoring point.

Risks

Intense precipitation can trigger overflow structures; accidental failure of lifting systems can discharge untreated sewage into the lake. Possible pollution source: inadequate management of the sewerage network. The Mergozzo Lake Canal flows in from the northwest, a stream from the campground from the north, and the Toce River mouth from the south.
