Madalena Norte is an urban beach with extensive sandy morphology located in Vila Nova de Gaia on the Douro River. The beach is monitored for bathing water quality under Portuguese regulations and has a considerable sand strip.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing restriction or advisory occurred due to short-term pollution in the 2024 bathing season. Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks.

Risks

Faecal contamination may originate from the local sewerage network and the tributary ribeira de Atães. Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of the tributary during rainfall events or discharge of untreated effluents from malfunction of the wastewater pumping station. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no historical occurrence.
