Madalena Sul is an urban beach with an extensive sand strip located in Vila Nova de Gaia. The beach has a sandy morphology and considerable beach area. It is situated on the Douro water body and is monitored for bathing water quality.

14 June to 14 September 2025.

Water Quality

Water quality classification complies with Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution events were recorded in the 2024 bathing season. Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks.

Risks

Short-term pollution unlikely but possible due to excessive flow of the tributary during rainfall events, which can carry microbiological load. May also occur due to discharge of untreated effluents in case of malfunction in the wastewater pumping station. Faecal contamination may originate from the local sewerage network and the Madalena tributary. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no historical occurrence.
