Matosinhos is an urban beach with an extensive sand strip bordered by an urban waterfront. The bathing water is monitored weekly during the official bathing season. If pollution occurs that affects water quality, bathing will be advised against or prohibited.

June 14 to September 14, 2025. Sampling frequency: weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). In the 2024 bathing season, bathing was advised against or prohibited for 14 days due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Short-term pollution can occur due to excessive surface flow from tributaries during rainfall, entrainment of microbiological load, and contamination from rainwater and sewerage networks. Pollution may also result from proximity to Leixões harbor (fishing, passenger, and cargo boats). Faecal contamination can originate from the rainwater network, from the Leça river and Ribeira da Riguinha tributaries that empty near the bathing water, from malfunction in the wastewater pumping station, and from nearby boats. Cyanobacteria has a moderate potential for proliferation with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no historical occurrence.
