Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Ceresolo is a sandy-pebbly beach located on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore near Laveno-Mombello in the Lombardy region. The beach has a width of 4 metres and is accessed via a narrow pathway from a parking area. The water is classified as excellent quality based on monitoring data from 2019–2022. The area is subject to seasonal algal blooms, though no toxic effects on swimmers have been recorded.

Water

Lake Maggiore. The beach area extends 0.050 km². The water body is at an altitude of 203 metres above sea level. The hydrographic basin is the Ticino River.

Location

Located in Ceresolo, a few kilometres from Laveno-Mombello on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in Varese Province, Lombardy. Access is via a parking area adjacent to the road, with a narrow pathway leading to the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for the period 2019–2022. Monitoring conducted by CNR and ARPA at the Pallanza buoy tracks pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, intestinal enterococci, and cyanobacteria. The sewage treatment plant serving the area respects discharge limits under applicable regulations.

Risks

Possible short-duration pollution events from unfavourable meteorological conditions, land runoff, water stagnation, and unauthorised discharges. Seasonal algal blooms are possible, though no cases exceeding regulatory thresholds have been recorded in the last three years. No toxic effects on swimmers or the aquatic environment have been documented.
