Cerro

Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Cerro is a sandy beach with free access located on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore near Laveno-Mombello in the Lombardy region. The beach is 15 metres wide and situated at an altitude of 195 metres above sea level. Water quality has been classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2019–2022. The area covers approximately 0.070 square kilometres.

Location

Located in the municipality of Laveno-Mombello in the Province of Varese, Lombardy, on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore at a place called Cerro. Parking is available. The beach is a few kilometres from Laveno-Mombello town.

Facilities

Parking, bar-restaurant, benches, shower, drinking fountain. Dogs are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference period 2019–2022). Monitoring is conducted by the Pallanza buoy (CNR and ARPA), tracking the presence and concentration of pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, intestinal Enterococci, and cyanobacteria. No threshold exceedances were recorded in the last three years. No anomalous events have been documented. No toxic effects on swimmers or the aquatic environment have been recorded.

Risks

Possible seasonal algal blooms. Potential pollution sources include unfavourable meteorological conditions such as heavy weather events, soil runoff, stagnation, and unauthorised or accidental discharges of contaminated liquids or debris. No anthropogenic activities are known to promote eutrophication and cyanobacteria growth. If algal proliferation occurs, the potentially toxic species involved would be cyanobacteria, components of phytoplankton.
