Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Guree is a sandy beach with free access located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in Monvalle, Lombardia. The beach is 15 metres wide and adjoins a spacious meadow. Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2019–2022. The area is suitable for swimming and recreation.

Location

Monvalle, Varese Province, Lombardia, on the south-eastern shore of Lake Maggiore near the town centre. Parking is available. Contact: Comune di Monvalle (0332799507).

Parking, toilets, showers, bar, restaurant. Dogs allowed on leash. Playground in adjacent meadow. Nearby marina for small boats. Natural walking trails including access to the historic Mulino di Turro mill.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for the period 2019–2022. Monitoring conducted by CNR and ARPA via the Pallanza buoy tracks pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli, intestinal Enterococci) and cyanobacteria. The sewage treatment plant serving Monvalle complies with discharge limits set by regulations.

Risks

Possible short-term pollution events from unfavourable weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, causing soil runoff, stagnant water, and accidental or unauthorised discharge of liquids or pollutants. Seasonal algal blooms are possible. Cyanobacteria are identified as potentially toxic species in the phytoplankton.
