Arolo is a bathing beach located on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore near Leggiuno, a few kilometres from Laveno Mombello in Lombardy, Italy. The beach has a width of 10 metres and is situated at an altitude of 195 metres above sea level. Water quality has been classified as excellent for the period 2019–2022. The area offers various recreational opportunities beyond swimming, including a small boat marina, children's playground, and lakeside promenade.

Water

Lake Maggiore. The bathing area covers 0.115 square kilometres and is situated at 195 metres above sea level. The water body is part of the Ticino River basin.

Location

Located in Leggiuno, a few kilometres from Laveno Mombello, on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in the province of Varese, Lombardy. Parking is available. The nearby Hermitage of Saint Catherine can be visited via the Saint Catherine loop trail.

Facilities

Parking, bar, restaurant, shower, automated external defibrillator, benches. Small boat marina, children's playground, lakeside promenade. Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2019–2022 reference period). Monitoring by CNR and ARPA buoys at Pallanza tracks pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, intestinal Enterococci, and cyanobacteria. The sewage system serving the Arolo fraction discharges through a treatment plant in Monvalle that complies with applicable discharge limits.

Risks

Seasonal algal blooms are possible, particularly cyanobacteria. Short-term pollution events may result from unfavourable weather conditions such as heavy storms, causing soil washoff, water pooling, and spills of various materials. Accidental or unauthorised discharges of sewage or contaminating debris are possible. No anomalous events have been recorded. Potential for cyanobacteria proliferation exists, though no anthropogenic activities promoting eutrophication have been identified.
