Santino is a sandy and gravelly beach located on the left orographic side of the San Bernardino stream in Verbania, Piedmont. The beach spans 154 metres in width and sits at an altitude of 197 metres above sea level. It is a public bathing area with no infrastructure or services available. The water body is classified as a small surface-flow river course.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: GOOD. Based on 18 routine samples from 2020–2023. Escherichia coli 90th percentile: 260.1 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 423.4 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci 90th percentile: 138.8 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 208.3 MPN/100 ml. The catchment area is serviced by a treatment plant approximately 5 km north of the monitoring point. Urban discharge sources and riparian/alluvial zone alterations represent significant pressures on the water body. Scattered houses near the monitoring zone may not be connected to the sewage system.

Risks

Intense precipitation can trigger overflow structures. Accidental failures of pumping systems can discharge untreated wastewater. Inadequate sewage network management is a possible pollution source. No cyanobacterial monitoring is performed periodically. No macroalgae, phytoplankton, or harmful algal bloom proliferation has been detected.
