Mommark Marina

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Mommark Marina is a fine, broad sandy beach approximately 20 metres wide located along a 1.5 kilometre bathing water area that extends to the Bellevue summer house district. The beach has a sand bottom with a water depth of 0.5 metres reached at approximately 4.5 metres from shore and 1 metre depth at approximately 8 metres from shore. The water deepens quickly. The beach is situated on the Lillebælt strait and is used for swimming, dog walking, horse riding, and recreational fishing.

Water

Marine water body in Lillebælt strait. The bathing water area is 1.5 kilometres long. Water depth reaches 0.5 metres at approximately 4.5 metres from shore and 1 metre at approximately 8 metres from shore. Brackish water with salinity of 16–24 ‰. Current direction is predominantly northerly, westerly, or southeasterly, primarily flowing along the coast in both directions, sometimes directly toward the western shore.

Location

The beach is accessed via Mommarkvej in the Mommark area, Sydals, with the marina located at Mommarkvej 380. The immediate hinterland includes a harbour, Mommark Camping, and the Bellevue summer house district. Public bus transport is available from the parking area, which includes disabled parking spaces.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. Testing occurs from 1 June to 15 September for the indicator bacteria E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Analysis results from the last four years show no exceedances of fecal bacteria limit values. The risk of fecal contamination is primarily from households with mechanical treatment and private discharge directly to watercourses or sea. Watercourses also carry surface water from fields. Contamination from heavy rainfall is typically short-lived, lasting a maximum of three days.

Risks

Low risk of cyanobacteria bloom in the region; none have been observed on this beach. No previous plant plankton bloom observed during the bathing season (1 June–15 September). Small risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up on the shore; bathing is generally discouraged when large quantities of seaweed are present due to potential toxin formation in decomposing seaweed and protection of disease-causing bacteria.
