Præstens Skov is a approximately 700-metre-long rocky beach located in Vester Skerninge, Denmark, backed by a forest and camping area. The beach features a mix of small and large stones, with a seabed composition of stones close to shore, followed by a strip of kelp forest, and sand in deeper water. A 1–3 metre high coastal cliff borders the beach, with several stairways providing access from both the forest and the campsite. The water is classified as saltwater with small tidal differences of less than 0.5 metres.

Water

Saltwater body in the South Funen Archipelago. Water depth less than 2 metres extends approximately 100 metres from shore. Current direction is variable depending on wind conditions but primarily from the southwest. Tidal range is less than 0.5 metres.

Location

Located in Vester Skerninge, near Svendborg, Denmark. The nearest address is Strandgårdsvej 13B, 5762 Vester Skerninge (at the campsite). Parking is available both at the campsite entrance and in Præstens Skov forest.

Facilities

Bathing jetty available at the campsite (public access). Parking available. Toilet facilities at the campsite. Bus access. Mobile coverage throughout the beach. No kiosk or restaurant. No beach surveillance tower. No Blue Flag designation.

Season

Official monitoring season from 1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Bathing water classified as Excellent quality based on control samples from the last four years. Routine water samples are collected during the bathing season (1 June to 15 September) and analysed for E. coli and Enterococcus bacteria. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins. Results and warnings are published on Svendborg Kommune's website at www.svendborg.dk/badevand.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and phytoplankton blooms assessed as low but can occur, particularly during prolonged warm periods with high nutrient levels. Risk of macroalgae (kelp) washup in the water's edge; bathing is not recommended near large accumulations of decaying kelp as toxic substances can form and disease-causing bacteria may be present. Risk of glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills. Syltemade Å stream formerly posed a faecal contamination risk but has been improved and no longer constitutes a pollution source. Sudden contamination from recreational boats, slurry tanks, or sewage lines remains possible.
