Ballen

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Ballen is a child-friendly sandy beach located at Ballen Harbour in southern Funen, Denmark. The beach is approximately 120 metres long and 5–10 metres wide, with fine sand and some small stones. A bathing platform is installed during the bathing season. The beach is designated with the Blue Flag environmental certification and is classified as having excellent water quality.

Water

Saltwater body in the South Funen Archipelago. Water depth less than 2 metres extends approximately 70 metres from shore. The seabed consists of sand with stones and seaweed in shallow water. Tidal range is less than 0.5 metres. Current direction varies with wind conditions but is primarily from the southwest.

Location

Nearest address: Strandvej 38, 5762 Vester Skerninge. The beach is located at Ballen Harbour with an open grassy area providing parking adjacent to the beach. Bus access is available.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. The classification is based on routine control samples taken during the bathing season (1 June–15 September) analysing for E. coli and enterococci bacteria. The classification is recalculated annually. Syltemade Å stream, located west of the harbour, was previously a pollution source but has shown excellent water quality since 2015.

Risks

Swimming is prohibited at the harbour entrance due to risk of collision with incoming and outgoing vessels. Algal blooms (cyanobacteria and phytoplankton) are possible during prolonged warm periods with high nutrient levels. Seaweed (macroalgae) accumulation at the water's edge may contain toxins and disease-causing bacteria. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Sudden pollution from pleasure boat accidents, slurry tanks, or sewer lines is possible.
