Egernsund

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Egernsund is a sandy beach approximately 140 metres long and 7–9 metres wide located in the southeastern part of Egernsund on Flensburg Fjord. The beach features a bathing bridge and the seafloor consists of sand, reaching a depth of 1 metre at approximately 25 metres from the shore. The beach is bounded by two breakwaters and backed by residential buildings and a newer holiday home area.

Water

Brackish marine water in Flensburg Fjord with a salinity of 16–24 ‰. Water currents typically flow in westerly, northerly or easterly directions, determined by water movement in and out of Flensburg Fjord and Nybøl Nor.

Location

Egernsund, southeastern part of the town on Flensburg Fjord in Broagerland. Access via Lågmajvej where a small public car park is available. The Marina Minde yacht harbour car park is also available. Public transport is available on Brovej approximately 600 metres from the beach.

Facilities

Bathing bridge, rubbish bins, information boards, toilet, table and bench, ramp. Public transport available 600 metres away.

1 June to 15 September

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent. Monitoring is conducted between 1 June and 15 September by a laboratory analysing for indicator bacteria E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Analysis results from the last four years show no exceedances of the limit value for faecal coliform bacteria.

Risks

High risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up, though this has not resulted in degraded bathing water quality. Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms. No blue-green algae has been observed at this beach. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms during the bathing season. The primary likelihood of faecal coliform bacteria is from storm water discharge outlets in the event of misconnections in separately sewered areas.
