Vemmingbund is a sandy beach approximately 1 km long located in a summer house area at the end of Vemmingbund inlet. The beach is child-friendly due to shallow water, with a depth of 1 m reached at approximately 30 m from shore and 2 m depth at approximately 75 m. The seabed consists of sand with scattered seaweed growth and stones, and marram grass vegetation is present on the beach. The bathing water is classified as excellent based on four years of monitoring data.

Water

Marine brackish water body. Salinity ranges from 16–24 ‰. Maximum depth is 28 m. Water depth of 1 m is reached approximately 30 m from shore; 2 m depth is reached approximately 75 m from shore. Current direction is primarily southerly or northerly along the coast, with possible westerly or easterly currents perpendicular to the shore. Vemmingbund empties into Sønderborg Bay and adjoins Natura 2000 area number 197 (Flensborg Fjord, Bredgrund, and surrounding waters).

Location

Vemmingbund is located in the municipality of Sønderborg, Denmark, at the end of Vemmingbund inlet adjacent to a summer house area. Access to the beach is available from parking areas. The southern part of the beach can be identified by rescue number A410 and the northern part by A415.

Facilities

Lifeguard service (implied through monitoring and rescue protocols). Blue Flag beach designation indicates enhanced beach maintenance.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 15 September. Analysis tests for E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria. No exceedances of limit values for faecal bacteria have been recorded in the last four years. The main potential sources of faecal contamination are incorrect sewage connections, surface water from surrounding fields, or streamflow outlets in the bathing area. Contamination is typically short-lived, lasting a maximum of three days after heavy rainfall, due to rapid dilution and transport by currents.

Risks

High risk of seaweed (macroalgae) washup, though this has not degraded water quality. Toxins can form in decomposing seaweed, and pathogenic bacteria can survive in seaweed for extended periods. Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms; none have been observed. No previous observations of phytoplankton blooms during the bathing season. Cold bottom water can be brought to the surface during offshore winds.
