Munkemøllebugten

Munkemøllebugten is a bathing beach located on the northern side of Flensborg Fjord near Rønshoved. The beach extends approximately 300 meters with a narrow shoreline varying from 1 to 3 meters wide and long grass in the background. The seabed consists of sand with small stones in the water's edge, forming a very shallow bay with depths under 1 meter extending up to approximately 100 meters from the shore. The water has been classified as excellent quality based on regular control samples taken between 2017 and 2020.

Water

Shallow bay with sandy seabed and small stones at the water's edge. Water depth is under 1 meter up to approximately 100 meters from the shoreline, and under 5 meters depth up to approximately 200 meters from the shoreline. Current direction in the area is variable.

Location

Located on the northern side of Flensborg Fjord, slightly north of Rønshoved, on the municipal border between Sønderborg and Aabenraa. Access to the beach is limited via footpaths or along the coast and private roads.

Season

1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on regular control samples from 2017 to 2020 and is revised annually before the bathing season. Samples taken at the monitoring station show excellent quality. The nearest residential properties are not connected to sewage systems. Two outlets exist on the beach from a private watercourse and a forest lake in the hinterland; both are assessed as contributing relatively low levels of pollution.

Risks

Pollution risk is highest during strong winds and heavy rain. During significant precipitation, possible sewage discharge from nearby non-municipal sewer-connected residential properties may occur into watercourses, though such pollution is always short-term and typically lasts a maximum of 3 days. Risk of cyanobacterial blooms exists, particularly after rainy periods with subsequent warm weather. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) can occur at the shoreline. Potential sudden contamination from boat accidents, manure tanks, and sewage pipe failures is possible.
