Rinkenæs Nederby is a sandy beach extending approximately 150 metres with a width of 7–9 metres, located on Rinkenæs Bay. The beach has a soft sand bottom with scattered seaweed and is very shallow, reaching a depth of 0.5 metres at approximately 45 metres from shore, making it child-friendly. A bathing pier is available. The beach is classified as excellent based on four years of monitoring data.

Water

Marine brackish water in Rinkenæs Bay with salinity ranging from 16–24 ‰. The beach extends approximately 150 metres with a width of 7–9 metres. The seabed consists of soft sand with scattered seaweed vegetation. Water depth of 0.5 metres is reached at approximately 45 metres from shore. Current direction is typically westerly, northerly, or easterly, flowing in and out of the bay.

Location

Located in Sønderborg Municipality, accessible from Nederbyvej via Lærkelunden Camping or Gendarmstien. The village of Rinkenæs Nederby with year-round residents is situated behind the campground. The nearest town is Gråsten.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 15 September, testing for E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria. Periodic exceedances of bacterial limits have occurred, primarily due to rainwater-related overflow events during heavy precipitation and malfunctions in single-property wastewater systems. An overflow structure failure in Kirmajbæk resulted in wastewater contamination. Most contamination events are short-term and typically resolve within three days.

Risks

Risk of fecal contamination from rainwater-dependent overflows during heavy precipitation, incorrect connections, and overflow discharges from individual properties. Seaweed (macroalgae) washup may occur but has not degraded water quality; however, decaying seaweed can produce toxins and harbour disease-causing bacteria. Very low risk of cyanobacteria blooms; none have been observed. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms during the bathing season.
