The Alqueva Reservoir bathing zone in Cheles is located in the municipality of Cheles, Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain. It is situated 5.3 km northwest of the town of Cheles within the Guadiana River basin. The reservoir is a large continental freshwater body featuring a sandy and rocky lakebed. The bathing area is surrounded by Mediterranean forest vegetation, including extensive oak forests and cork oaks, with diverse fauna including emblematic bird species and native fish populations.

The Alqueva Reservoir is a monomictic, siliceous freshwater reservoir belonging to the Guadiana River basin. It is the largest capacity reservoir in Europe with 4,150 Hm³ capacity. The dam is a conventional concrete arch structure 96 m high and 458 m long, constructed in 2002, with a 240 MW reversible hydroelectric station. The lakebed consists of small stones and fine sands. The bathing zone beach comprises bare soil and sandy material.

Cheles, Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain. Located 5.3 km northwest of the town of Cheles. Access via signposted directions from Cheles town centre along Calle Egido, following an asphalt road for 3–4 km then an unpaved road. Parking available.

Facilities

Parking, lifeguards, informational signage, snack bar, picnic areas, waste bins, toilets, showers, recreational zone, containers. Estimated bathers: 200 on weekends, 50 on weekdays. No domestic animals allowed. No water pools, dock, barbecue facilities, or water fountains.
