Esmecke-Stausee is an artificial reservoir in a mid-elevation location above 200 metres. The bathing area covers a water surface of 15,000 square metres with a maximum depth of 1.5 metres in the designated bathing zone. The lake is fed by two streams and has a very small catchment area of 1.2 square kilometres. Water temperature stratification occurs seasonally, and the water tends to experience occasional algal blooms, particularly in summer months when visibility can be poor.

Water

Artificial reservoir (dam) with a surface area of 1.8 hectares. Catchment area of 1.2 square kilometres. Average depth 3.8 metres, maximum depth 10 metres. Maximum depth in the bathing zone is 1.5 metres. Bathing area shoreline length is 25 metres. Bedrock geology is calcareous. Substrate is silty. Water exchange time less than 10 days. Water body is thermally stratified. Shore structure is natural. Bathing beach length is 25 metres.

Location

The bathing water is managed by the municipality of Eslohe, located at Schultheißstraße 2, 59889 Eslohe. A car park with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles is situated below the dam. A managed kiosk with toilet facilities is located above the dam.

Facilities

Lifeguards (DLRG) provide supervision on warm summer days. Toilets available at kiosk above the dam. Car park with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles below the dam.

Water Quality

Water quality classification and monitoring results for 2024–2027 are under assessment. The profile was established in 2024 and will be reviewed if classification deteriorates. No specific pollution sources were identified from municipal treatment plants, industrial facilities, or stormwater systems. Septic tanks present in catchment but assessed as causing no burden. Sealed surfaces, residential buildings (3 individual dwellings), and camping sites present but assessed as causing no burden. Uferrandstreifen (riparian buffer) present and assessed as causing no burden.

Risks

Water temperature drops sharply beyond the designated bathing area towards the dam, making swimming outside marked zones unsafe. The lake is subject to occasional algal blooms. Phytoplankton mass development is assessed as medium risk. Future cyanobacterial mass development is possible. Visibility is sometimes very low in summer months due to limited water circulation. Filamentous algae present in the lake.
