Sorpetalsperre is an artificial reservoir and designated bathing water in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The bathing area at Strandbad Langscheid spans 60 metres of shoreline and has maintained excellent water quality ratings for four consecutive years. The reservoir covers 330 hectares with a mean depth of 20.71 metres and a maximum depth of 57 metres. Water temperatures range from 12.6°C to 21.7°C with a mean of 18.5°C.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent (2020–2023). pH values range from 7.98 to 9.11 with a mean of 8.67. Water transparency exceeds 2 metres in most cases with a minimum of 1.4 metres. Nutrient status is mesotrophic (level 2). Water quality at the bathing site is described as very consistent and unaffected by disturbances occurring elsewhere in the reservoir.

Risks

Cercariae (duck flea causing swimmer's itch) were observed in shallow water areas outside the designated bathing beach in 2007, but not at Strandbad Langscheid. No cyanobacterial blooms have been observed in the past four years, and the risk of future mass development is assessed as none. No macroalgal masses or phytoplankton masses have been identified.
