Pharos Paphos is a sandy beach in Paphos, Cyprus, with local rocky outcrops on the surface. The beach is 720 meters long with an average water depth of 2.5 meters and maximum depth of 5 meters. The shoreline features a semi-natural coastal zone with sandy substrate, frequent rocky substrate, and strong algae presence on the seabed. The beach is located within the Natura 2000 SPA network and is designated with the Blue Flag status.

Water

Coastal water body named Northern Paphos. The seabed is covered with sandy material with frequent rocky substrate and algae. The beach is 720 meters long with an average water depth of 2.5 meters and a maximum depth of 5 meters. Strong coastal currents are a characteristic feature of the coastal zone.

Location

Paphos District, Paphos Municipality, Cyprus. The monitoring point is located at the center of the beach in an area of dense swimmer presence. Coordinates: 32.4064°E, 34.7644°N (ETRS89).

Facilities

Public facilities are available. Lifeguards and lifesaving equipment are provided from 11:00 to 17:30 during the summer season. Waste collection bins are present along the entire beach, maintained by Paphos Municipality. Summer services include sunbeds and umbrellas. A catering and recreation area is present. The beach holds Blue Flag status.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal water body to which this bathing water belongs is in good ecological status. Monitoring has been conducted for many years, with systematic reporting under Directive 76/160/EEC beginning in 2004 after Cyprus joined the European Union.

Risks

Strong coastal currents are present and appropriate warning signage has been installed. There is a moderate degree of risk for macroalgae and phytoplankton development. No short-term pollution incidents were recorded during swimming seasons 2008-2010. The risk of short-term pollution is negligible, with possible sources being rainwater runoff occurring approximately once during the swimming season lasting 1-2 days.
