Cyprus Coastal 1 - Excellent

Alykes is an artificially modified beach in southern Paphos, Cyprus, with most of its surface covered by concrete. The beach is 170 metres long with an average water depth of 1.5 metres and maximum depth of 3 metres. The shoreline is reinforced with two breakwaters and two perpendicular jetties that have significantly altered natural water circulation and sediment movement. The beach serves approximately 700 swimmers per day during the bathing season.

Water

Coastal water body named South Paphos (code CY_8-C1), part of River Basin District Cyprus (CY001). The beach is 170 metres long with average water depth of 1.5 metres and maximum depth of 3 metres. The seabed is sandy with gravel, and bedrock is exposed in places. Water circulation and renewal have been substantially modified by the presence of breakwaters and perpendicular jetties.

Location

Paphos Municipality, Paphos District, Cyprus. Coordinates: 32.4175°E, 34.7544°N (ETRS89). The monitoring point is located where the majority of swimmers concentrate. Parking and public facilities are available.

Facilities

Public facilities including waste bins, lifeguards and lifesaving equipment available from 11:00 to 17:30 during summer season, sunbeds and umbrellas available seasonally, numerous catering and recreational facilities, Blue Flag designation.

Season

Monitoring conducted during bathing periods. Southeastern winds prevail during the swimming season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal water body is in good ecological condition. Isolated pollution incidents were recorded on 5 July 2005 and 20 June 2006, but could not be attributed to specific pollution sources. The bathing water has been designated with the Blue Flag status.

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development. Small risk of short-term pollution from stormwater runoff and potential illegal sewage connections to stormwater networks. Possible pollution sources include stormwater from eastern Paphos and passing vessels from Paphos port, though port-related pollution is not expected to significantly impact the beach due to prevailing southeastern winds during the bathing season.
