Frente Azul is an urban beach in Espinho with an extensive sand strip bordered by an urban waterfront. The bathing water is monitored weekly throughout the official bathing season. In case of pollution events affecting water quality, bathing may be advised against or prohibited.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Short-term pollution events are unlikely but can occur during heavy precipitation due to microbiological load from the Mocho stream located north of the beach. Faecal contamination may originate mainly from the Mocho creek outflow near the beach. One day of bathing restriction due to short-term pollution was recorded during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution from faecal contamination is possible during precipitation events caused by overflow from the Mocho stream. Cyanobacteria have a moderate proliferation potential with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no historical records.
