Espinho - Baía is an urban beach with an extensive sand strip of fine to medium sand and rocky outcrops in the frontal zone. Located in the municipality of Espinho along the Douro River basin coast, the beach is monitored weekly for water quality. Bathing is advised against or prohibited if pollution events affect water aptitude, though no such advisories were issued during the 2024 bathing season.

Coastal water body designated PTCOST3, part of the Douro River basin. The beach features fine to medium sand with rocky shale outcrops.

Location

Espinho municipality, Portugal. Monitoring point coordinates: latitude 41.00889°, longitude -8.64694°. The Silvalde stream is located to the south of the beach.

Season

2025 season: June 14 to September 14. Sampling frequency: weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified under Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No bathing advisories or prohibitions were issued due to short-term pollution events during the 2024 bathing season. Fecal contamination is possible during intense precipitation events due to microbiological load in rainwater drainage networks.

Risks

Short-term pollution events are unlikely but can occur during precipitation, with microbiological load from rainwater networks or the Silvalde stream. Cyanobacteria have a moderate potential for proliferation with a history of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no history of occurrence.
