Seca is an urban beach located in Espinho municipality with an extensive sand strip bordered by urban waterfront. The beach is situated in the Douro River basin and is monitored weekly during the bathing season. Water quality is managed under Portuguese legislation (Decreto-Lei 135/2009, amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012).

June 14 to September 14, 2025. Sampling frequency: Weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Bathing was advised against or prohibited for 1 day during the 2024 bathing season due to short-term pollution events. Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur during heavy precipitation due to microbiological load from the Mocho stream (located north of the beach), contamination of the rainwater network, or discharge of untreated effluents from malfunctioning pumping stations.

Risks

Fecal contamination from sanitation networks (lifting station) and rainwater drainage systems, and from the Mocho stream flowing north of the beach. Cyanobacteria blooms have a moderate potential for proliferation with historical occurrence records. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation are unlikely with no historical occurrence.
