Gåsevig Strand is a 650-meter-long beach located 1 km east of Sønderballe on the shores of Lillebælt. The beach consists mainly of fine sand with small and medium-sized stones scattered evenly, and the seabed is similarly composed of sand and medium-sized stones. The beach is 10–15 meters wide with sloping terrain and panoramic views over Lillebælt. Water in this area is classified as brackish water.

Water

Lillebælt (Little Belt). Water is classified as brackish. Water depth is under 2 meters for 100 meters from the shore. Current direction is variable, primarily from the south, based on 50 assessments made between 2006–2011.

Location

Located 1 km east of Sønderballe in Haderslev Municipality, Denmark. A parking area is available south of Sønderballe Lejrskole, with a steep staircase leading down to the beach. Gåsevig Strand Campingplads is located at the northern end of the beach.

Season

Routine monitoring is conducted during the bathing season. Classification is revised annually in May before the season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine testing between 2012–2015 for indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci. The classification is revised annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

A pipe-fed stream has an outlet at the southern end of the beach and may periodically contain high concentrations of fecal bacteria; bathing in the stream outlet is not recommended. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae (large seaweed) being washed ashore is low. Risk of chemical pollution such as oil spills is very low. Glass fragments and litter may occasionally occur. Sudden pollution from incidents such as oil spills, slurry tank leaks, or sewage lines is possible.
