Sønderballe Strand

Sønderballe Strand is a 180-meter-long beach composed of fine sand with scattered small stones. The beach is located in a pleasant marina environment with views over Genner Bay. The water is classified as brackish water with gradually increasing depth offshore. The beach is part of a summer cottage area and offers a scenic coastal setting.

Water

Brackish water in Genner Bay. The beach is 180 meters long and 15 meters wide. The seabed consists of sand with small and medium-sized stones. Water depth is under 2 meters at 175 meters from the shore. Current direction is variable, primarily from west and southwest.

Location

Sønderballe Strand is located south of the Sønderballe Strand summer cottage area and Sønderballe Camping. Access is via Sønderballe Strand road leading to a parking area at the beach and another parking area east of the summer cottage area. Toilets are available at the parking area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good. Classification is based on routine monitoring of E. coli and enterococci bacteria conducted during the bathing season (1 June to 1 September). The classification was calculated from samples taken regularly between 2012 and 2015 and is revised annually before the bathing season begins. Historical monitoring has not detected health-threatening levels of fecal bacteria.

Risks

Two watercourses discharge near the beach: Sælsbæk discharges on the beach and may contain high concentrations of fecal bacteria at times; Hopsø outlet is located 300 meters east of the beach and similarly poses a risk. Bathing is not recommended at watercourse outlets. Low risk of blue-green algae blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large macroalgae washing ashore. Glass shards and litter can occur. Risk of chemical contamination is very low. Sudden pollution can occur from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, or sewage lines.
