Gjessø is a small lake located in the town of Gjessø, southwest of Silkeborg in Denmark. The lake covers 1.5 hectares with a maximum depth of 6.5 metres and average depth of 3.3 metres. The lake bottom is predominantly muddy with aquatic plants covering a large portion. Bathing bridges have been established on two sides of the lake. The bathing water is classified as excellent based on data from the previous four years.

Water

Small lake with area of 1.5 hectares, maximum depth of 6.5 metres, average depth of 3.3 metres. Bottom is predominantly muddy with extensive aquatic plant growth. The lake has no inflow and very limited water exchange. No significant currents occur in the lake.

Location

The lake is located in the town of Gjessø, southwest of Silkeborg. Access is available from both Rustrupvej and Gjessøparken, with bathing bridges at both locations.

Official monitoring season runs from 1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as excellent based on four years of data. No wastewater discharge outlets exist in the lake. Potential sources of fecal contamination are limited to bathers and animals. Chemical pollution risk from traffic accidents is minimal.

Risks

Significant risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Some cyanobacteria species can produce toxins that may be fatal in worst cases, though poisoning risk from bathing is rare. Risk of other phytoplankton blooms also exists; excessive algal growth can raise water pH causing discomfort to swimmers. Bathing is not recommended when water is green, covered in green film, or when feet are not visible at knee depth. Children and animals should not enter water during heavy foam or algae presence at shoreline.
