Strandpromenaden Hjerting is a 1200-meter-long beach marked by a blue line in Ho Bay near Hjerting. The beach consists of coarse sand with scattered small stones and has been classified as excellent water quality since 2011. A 660-meter wooden promenade extends along the beach with stairs, ramps, a grandstand, and a viewing platform providing access for all abilities. The water is shallow and influenced by tides that change approximately every six hours.

Water

Saltwater bay (Ho Bay). The beach is 1200 meters long and 20 to 60 meters wide. Water depth is less than 2 meters up to 400 meters from the coast. The seabed consists of coarse sand. The area is shallow and affected by tidal changes occurring approximately every six hours. Water contains fine suspended sediment from natural mudflat silt, resulting in unclear visibility.

Location

Strandpromenaden Hjerting is centrally located near Hjerting town facing Ho Bay. Access is via Strandpromenaden and Hjerting Strandvej, which lead to two parking areas equipped with toilet facilities. Additional parking spaces are available along the road.

Wooden promenade with stairs, ramps, grandstand, and viewing platform. Wheelchair-accessible access to the beach. Toilet facilities at parking areas. Life-saving rings installed. Red flags used to warn of water quality issues or hazards.

Water Quality

Water classified as excellent quality. Classification is based on routine monitoring of faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) during the bathing season. The beach has maintained excellent classification since 2011. Monitoring occurs regularly over a 4-year assessment period.

Risks

Risk of contamination from combined sewer overflow system discharges during heavy rainfall; estimated 2-5 overflow episodes annually during bathing season. Hjerting Stream outlet carries surface water runoff with potential for high faecal bacteria concentrations during rainfall. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of significant macroalgae accumulation. Possible contamination from boat fuel spills, manure tanks, and sewage leaks. Glass shards and rubbish may occur.
