Hjerting Syd is a bathing beach approximately 1,300 metres long located in the southern part of Hjerting facing Ho Bay. The beach consists of coarse sand with scattered small to medium-sized stones and is 15 to 50 metres wide. The sand has a reddish appearance due to natural chemical processes between iron content and rainwater. The water is classified as saltwater and is shallow, affected by tides that change approximately every 6 hours. Water depth remains under 2 metres up to 1,000 metres from the shore.

Water

Saltwater bay (Ho Bay). Shallow water with depths under 2 metres extending 1,000 metres from shore. Water contains fine suspended material from natural tidal mud flats, making it naturally unclear. Primary current direction comes from the west, measured 53 times between 2006–2010.

Location

Located in the southern part of Hjerting facing Ho Bay. Access is via small paths from Hjerting Strandvej. No parking facilities are directly attached to the beach; the nearest parking is south of the beach at Sædding Strandvej, from which access requires crossing a watercourse or using a bridge at a grass-covered dyke.

Season

The bathing water profile is updated annually before the bathing season begins. Routine control samples are taken throughout the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Good based on routine monitoring of E. coli and enterococcus bacteria during the bathing season. Classification calculated from control samples taken regularly over the preceding 4-year period. The beach was classified as Satisfactory in 2020–2021 and improved to Good in 2022. Monitoring focuses on fecal indicator bacteria found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals and humans.

Risks

Three discharge outlets identified as pollution sources: an overflow structure north of the beach (2–5 discharge events during average summer due to heavy rainfall), a rainwater pipe at Hjerting Strandvej 99, and Guldager Møllebæk creek south of the beach. The creek outlet shows elevated E. coli concentrations and large populations of resting birds on sand spits are identified as a source of enterococcus. Bathing is discouraged at and around these discharge outlets; swimming bans are posted near Guldager Møllebæk. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is low; risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae wash-up is low.
