Hjerting Strandpark

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Hjerting Strandpark is a 450-metre-long beach located in Ho Bay in the northwestern part of Hjerting. The beach consists of coarse sand with scattered small stones and is 30 metres wide. The seabed also comprises coarse sand with a reddish appearance due to natural chemical processes between iron content and rainwater. Water depth is less than 2 metres for 300 metres from the shore.

Water

Saltwater bay (Ho Bay). Water depth under 2 metres for 300 metres from the shore. Tidal changes occur approximately every 6 hours. Primary current direction is from the west. Water contains fine suspended sediment from natural tidal areas, resulting in unclear water.

Location

Hjerting, northwestern Denmark, situated in Ho Bay. Parking is available at the park at Sanatorievej, approximately 400 metres from the beach via a winding path through the park. To the north is Sjelborg Strand and to the south is Strandpromenaden.

Toilets available at parking area at Sanatorievej. Bathing platform (badebro) present.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent. Classified as Excellent since 2011. Classification is based on regular control samples analysed for E. coli and enterococci bacteria taken over the last 4-year period and revised annually before the bathing season. Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 1 September.

Risks

Drainage and rainwater discharge outlets on both sides of the bathing platform may contain high concentrations of fecal bacteria during rainfall; bathing directly in these outlets is discouraged. Low risk of harmful algae blooms (cyanobacteria) and phytoplankton. Low risk of large quantities of seaweed (macroalgae) washing ashore. Glass, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Strong currents possible depending on tidal conditions; diving from the platform is prohibited. Water clarity limits visibility of feet due to natural suspended sediment.
