Sjelborg Strand is a 900-metre-long sandy beach with scattered small and medium-sized stones, located in Ho Bay in Denmark. The beach is 30 metres wide and has been classified as excellent water quality since 2014 based on routine monitoring of fecal indicator bacteria. The sand has a reddish appearance due to a natural chemical process between iron content and rainwater. The area is centrally located in a scenic and pleasant region.

Water

Saltwater bay (Ho Bay). Water depth is less than 2 metres up to 200 metres from the shore. The area is affected by tidal changes occurring approximately every 6 hours. Current direction is predominantly from the west. Water contains fine suspended matter from natural wadden sea silt, making it turbid.

Location

Sjelborg Strand is accessible via Sjelborggårdsvej and Sjelborg Strandvej, both leading to a large car park at the beach. A restaurant is located near the car park. Toilet facilities are available 100 metres northeast of the car park.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring for E. coli and enterococci bacteria during the bathing season. The beach has maintained excellent classification since 2014. Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 1 September annually.

Risks

Strong tidal currents present a hazard. An area north of the beach (Troldhøj, marked in red) has rapid changes in water depth up to 3 metres combined with strong tidal currents, creating drowning risk; bathing is not recommended in this area. A drainage outlet on the beach may contain high concentrations of fecal bacteria during rainfall. Low risk of cyanobacteria blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large quantities of macroalgae washing ashore. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
