Greve Badehotel

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Greve Badehotel is a natural beach located in the northern part of Køge Bay in Denmark. The beach stretches approximately one kilometre and features sand with occasional small stones at the waterline, with areas of macroalgae and larger stones 3–4 metres offshore. The beach is situated in an urban residential area near Copenhagen. Water salinity is relatively low at approximately 1 percent due to the location in the Baltic Sea region.

Water

Køge Bay, a saltwater body with relatively low salinity (approximately 1 percent). Water depth increases gradually: approximately 100 metres from shore reaches 1 metre depth, and approximately 150 metres from shore reaches 2 metres depth. The seabed consists of sand with occasional stones. Current direction is highly variable and wind-dependent, but typically weak and safe for swimmers.

Location

Greve, Denmark. The main beach is located at the end of the car park by Greve Strandkro. The beach extends northeast to Olsbækken outlet. Parking is available at Greve Strandkro.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'excellent' based on bathing water analyses from 2015–2018. In 2018, the classification was 'good'. Historically, quality has fluctuated between 'excellent' and 'poor'. Potential fecal pollution sources include: overflows to Olsbækken during heavy rainfall, overflows from Avedøre Wastewater Centre, and discharge from Mosede and Solrød treatment plants under unfavourable wind and current conditions.

Risks

Swimming is discouraged for at least three days after heavy rainfall (occurring 1–3 times per year) and when visibility depth is less than 1 metre. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms occur typically every 4–5 years and usually for short durations; toxic variants can occur and dogs should not drink affected water. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulates at the waterline but is removed weekly during the bathing season. Glass fragments and litter may occasionally occur.
