Karlstrup Strandpark is a natural beach located in the northern part of Køge Bay, part of an eight-kilometer stretch of beaches in the Greve municipality near Copenhagen. The beach extends approximately two kilometers toward the northeast toward Mosede Fort. The beach is cleaned weekly of seaweed throughout the bathing season to reduce odours. The water is salt but with relatively low salinity, typically around 1 percent.

Water

Natural sandy beach in Køge Bay with shallow waters. The beach width varies between 30 and 100 meters, with the actual sandy beach approximately 15 to 20 meters wide. The seabed consists of sand with some stones and macroalgae. Water depth typically requires walking 100 meters offshore to reach 1 meter depth and 150 meters to reach 2 meters depth. Current direction in the upper part of Køge Bay is highly variable and dependent on wind conditions, but currents are rarely particularly strong. Water is salt with approximately 1 percent salinity.

Location

Located in Greve municipality in the Karlslunde Strand area near Copenhagen. The main beach is situated at Karlslunde Mosevej / Karlslunde Strandvej, where parking is available. The beach extends northeast toward Mosede Fort and is located south of Mosede Harbour.

Water Quality

Bathing water quality is classified as 'good' based on analyses from 2015-2018, with 'good' classification also recorded in 2018. Water quality has varied between 'good' and 'satisfactory' over many years according to EU classification. Bathing is advised against for at least three days after very heavy rainfall, which occurs approximately 1-3 times per year, or if visibility depth is less than 1 meter.

Risks

Risk of faecal pollution from heavy rainfall events: overflow to Olsbækken can contribute significant contamination during heavy rainfall; overflow from Avedøre Wastewater Treatment Centre; discharge from Mosede and Solrød Treatment Plants may contribute under unfavourable wind and current conditions. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms: Køge Bay is affected by nutrients from treated wastewater and agriculture, creating potential for algal blooms in particular weather conditions. Cyanobacteria typically affect Karlstrup Strandpark only every 4-5 years and usually for very short periods. Cyanobacteria can occur in toxic variants, and dogs should not drink the water if blue-green algae is present. Macroalgae can accumulate at the water's edge. Glass shards and litter may occur.
