Mosede Fort

Mosede Fort is a natural beach in the northern part of Køge Bay near Greve, Denmark. The beach stretches approximately two kilometres and is characterised by sand with occasional smaller stones and dune vegetation. Seaweed that washes ashore during summer is regularly removed to minimize odour nuisance. The beach is situated in an urban area near Copenhagen with parking available at Karlslunde Centervej and Mosede Fort.

Water

Salt water bay (Køge Bay) with relatively low salinity of approximately 1%. Sand and stone seabed with occasional macroalgae. Water depth is typically shallow: 100 metres from shore to reach 1 metre depth and 150 metres to reach 2 metres depth. Current direction is highly variable and wind-dependent but typically weak and safe for swimmers.

Location

Greve municipality, Denmark. Located near Mosede Fort and Karlslunde Centervej in the Mosede Strand area. Parking is available at Karlslunde Centervej and Mosede Fort. The beach extends northeast to Mosede Harbour.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'good' based on bathing water analyses from 2015–2018. The water quality has historically fluctuated between 'good' and 'satisfactory' according to EU classification standards.

Risks

Swimming is discouraged for at least three days after heavy rainfall events (occurring 1–3 times annually) or when visibility depth is less than 1 metre. Potential sources of short-term contamination include overflows from Olsbækken, Biofos overflows, and discharges from KLAR Forsyning under unfavourable wind and current conditions. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms exists in particular weather situations but typically affects the beach only every 4–5 years and for short periods. Toxic cyanobacteria variants may occur and dogs should not drink affected water. Macroalgae accumulation can occur but is managed through weekly beach cleaning. Glass shards and litter may be present.
