Hundige Strand is part of Køge Bay Beach Park in the northern section of Køge Bay. The beach extends approximately two kilometres and features sand with scattered small stones. The strand width varies between 20 and 50 metres, with dunes and beach up to 90–250 metres wide. Water depth increases gradually, requiring approximately 100 metres to reach one metre depth and 150 metres to reach two metres depth. The beach functions as both a recreational area and coastal protection against flooding for nearby urban settlements.

Water

Marine water body in Køge Bay with salt water containing relatively low salinity of approximately 1 per cent. The seabed is sandy with scattered stones and macroalgae. Water depth is typically less than one metre at 100 metres from shore, and approximately two metres at 150 metres from shore. Current direction in the upper Køge Bay is highly variable and wind-dependent, though generally weak and safe for swimmers.

Location

Hundige Strand is located in Greve Municipality between Ishøj Harbour and Hundige Harbour. The main beach is accessible via Hundige Harbour Road, with large car parks available behind the beach.

Facilities

Lifeguards staff the beach daily and treat bathing visitors for glass cuts almost daily. Rubbish bins are emptied daily and in some cases multiple times per day during the bathing season.

Season

Monitoring and management occur during the bathing season, with rubbish removal intensified daily during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on bathing water analyses from 2015–2018 and has maintained excellent classification for many years. Bathing is advised against for at least three days after heavy rainfall, which occurs approximately 1–3 times per year, or when visibility depth is less than one metre. Potential fecal pollution sources include overflow from Strandpark Lakes (which can receive wastewater during overflow), discharges from Lille Vejleå and Store Vejleå rivers, overflow from Olsbækken (during heavy rain), overflow from Brøndby Harbour used during pump failures at treatment plants, and discharges from Avedøre wastewater treatment centre and Mosede treatment plant.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) risk exists due to nutrient loadings from wastewater and agricultural sources throughout Østersøen; Hundige Strand is typically affected only every 4–5 years and usually for short periods. Toxic cyanobacteria variants can occur and dogs should not drink water if blue-green algae is present. Macroalgae (seaweed) can accumulate in the water edge, promoting bacterial growth and prolonging fecal bacteria survival, though this is not considered a health problem at Hundige Strand. Glass shards and litter are regularly found. Phytoplankton is not considered a health problem at this location.
