Handrup Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Handrup Strand is a fine sand beach approximately 200 metres long located at Ebeltoft Bay near Handrup. The beach is 5–10 metres wide with minor stone and gravel content, and features a strip of smaller stones along the water's edge. The beach is privately owned but has public access. Water temperature varies between 15 °C and 22 °C during the bathing season, with salinity around 25 ‰.

Water

Coastal marine water in Ebeltoft Bay. The beach bottom consists of sand mixed with smaller portions of gravel and stones. The water is relatively shallow, with the 2-metre depth mark occurring more than 150 metres from the shore.

Location

Handrup, Syddjurs Kommune, Denmark. The beach is situated along Kystvejen near Lundshøjvej. Several unmarked parking spaces are available near the beach for use between sunrise and sunset.

Facilities

Parking spaces, life ring (redningskrans), tables and benches, bathing platform (summer season only), waste bins.

Season

1 May to 15 September (official bathing season with regular water quality monitoring).

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'Excellent'. Regular monitoring occurs during the bathing season (1 May to 15 September), with 4 samples analysed. Bacterial levels are consistently low and conditions remain very stable. The risk of fecal pollution is low due to limited sewage infrastructure in the area.

Risks

Possible short-term pollution sources include fecal contamination from scattered dwellings, manure spills, and toilet tank discharges from boats. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) risk is very low due to high salinity. Red tides from dinoflagellates (Ceratium) and ciliates can occur in summer and autumn. Kelp and seagrass accumulation is possible. Chemical pollution from shipping accidents is a low-risk concern. Pollen accumulation can occur in spring and early summer.
