Hellerup Strand is a bathing beach located centrally in Hellerup on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen in Gentofte Municipality. The beach stretches approximately 150 meters and forms part of Hellerup Strandpark, which covers about 2.5 hectares including the adjacent marina and green areas. The beach consists mainly of sand, with gardens (Rosenhaven and Staudehaven) immediately to the west.

Water

The bathing area is located in Øresund, a narrow strait. Water depth at 35 meters from the shore is 150 cm. The seabed consists of fine sand. Salinity typically varies between 8 and 22 parts per thousand. Water temperature during the bathing season ranges from approximately 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. Current speeds are generally low, with tidal variation less than 20 cm.

Location

Hellerup Strand is located at Ved Onsgårdsvej 18, 2900 Hellerup, centrally in Hellerup on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen. Hellerup Station is approximately 1 km from the beach. Public transport is available along nearby Strandvejen. Parking is available in marked spaces along Strandvejen and at a car park west of the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as Excellent (Udmærket) in 2022 based on data from 2019–2022. The beach has maintained an Excellent classification consistently from 2018 through 2022. Water quality is monitored during the official bathing season from 1 June to 15 September. Primary sources of temporary pollution are combined sewer overflows containing coliform bacteria from Gentofte's sewage system, particularly overflows U17 (100 m north) and U19 (250 m south), which discharge 1–3 times annually on average.

Risks

Combined sewer overflows from Gentofte's sewage system can cause temporary microbiological pollution under heavy rainfall and certain wind and current conditions. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is generally low but can occur with high concentrations in July–August during high-pressure periods and outflow from the Baltic Sea. Seaweed and macroalgae can accumulate during the bathing season. Pollen can periodically appear on the water surface. Weever fish (up to 50 cm long) with venomous spines on gills and back are present, though stings are rare in swimmers. Fireworms are common in summer and can cause painful contact reactions. Chemical pollution risks from old dumps are absent, though accidental spills and ship-related pollution are possible but rare. Sewage system failures or pipe breaks are rare.
