Marbæk Strand is a 1 kilometre long sandy beach located in a forested area south of Marbæk facing Ho Bay in Denmark. The beach is 30 to 50 metres wide with sand containing small stones and occasional larger stones. The seabed consists of sand, which may appear reddish due to natural chemical processes involving iron content and rainwater. The beach is situated in a scenic natural landscape with shallow waters characteristic of the Wadden Sea.

Water

Saltwater bay (Ho Bay) with tidal influence changing approximately every 6 hours. Water depth under 2 metres extends 500 metres from the coast. The water contains fine suspended matter from natural Wadden Sea sediments, making it naturally unclear. Currents primarily flow from the west.

Location

South of Marbæk, facing Ho Bay in Esbjerg Municipality, Denmark. Access is via Marbækgårdsvej, which leads to a parking area with associated toilet facilities. A large green area extends from the parking area down to the broad sandy beach.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality as of season 2022, based on routine monitoring during the bathing season (1 June to 1 September). Classification is calculated from water samples tested for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci). Historical classifications: 2014–2015 Good, 2016 onwards Excellent, 2020 Good, 2022 Excellent. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season.

Risks

A marked area south of the beach is subject to very strong currents and rapid seabed changes, creating drowning risk. Water depth in this area can reach 3 metres depending on tidal conditions, with sudden drops and strong tidal currents. Varde Å river outlet is 3.7 kilometres north and may contain high faecal bacterial concentrations during certain periods. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large seaweed accumulation. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occasionally occur.
