Hohenwarte-Stausee is a popular recreation area in the heart of Thuringia. The dammed Saale river winds through a fjord-like valley up to 1 km wide over 27 km, holding approximately 182 million cubic metres of water. It forms part of the 79.8 km long Saale cascade. The CP Alter bathing site is located in Alterbucht near Saalthal and features a dive school, boat rental services, restaurants, and accommodation facilities. The beach slopes gently, making it ideal for children.

Water

Reservoir (Stausee). Water surface area: 7.6 km². Maximum depth: 68 m. Elevation: 298 m above sea level. Ecological status class: very good (oligotrophic). Water level fluctuations during bathing season: less than 0.5 m.

Location

CP Am Alter, Alterbucht, near Saalthal in Unterwellenborn. Accessible via Saalfeld towards Unterwellenborn-Bucha or via Saalfeld towards Kaulsdorf-Hohenwarte, following signs to Saalthal. Parking available.

Toilets, sun lounging areas, parking, kiosk, reception, sanitary building with kitchen facilities.

Water Quality

No short-term pollution events have been recorded for 20 years. Ecological status class ÖKZ 1 (very good) with oligotrophic trophic level.

Risks

Occasional deposits of leaves, wood, and other organic material due to varying reservoir water levels. No known dangers from cyanobacteria blooms, macrophyte or filamentous algae blooms, bird droppings, or cercarial dermatitis.
