The Hohenwarte-Stausee is a popular recreational area in central Thuringia. The impounded Saale River winds for 27 km through a fjord-like landscape, varying in width up to 1 km and holding approximately 182 million cubic metres of water. It forms part of the 79.8 km long Saale cascade. The CP Greez bathing area is located approximately 2 km northeast of Neidenberga and consists of a bungalow settlement that is not open to the public, with no public facilities.

Water

Hohenwarte-Stausee is an artificial reservoir. Water surface area: 7.6 km². Maximum water depth: 68 metres. Elevation of mean water level: 298 metres above sea level. Artificial water level fluctuations are less than 0.5 metres during the bathing season. The ecological status class is ÖKZ 1 (very good) and the trophic level is oligotrophic.

Location

The bathing area is approximately 2 km northeast of the town of Neidenberga. Access is via Saalfeld in the direction of Kaulsdorf–Hohenwarte–Drognitz. The access road is unpaved and lacks signage. A parking area is available.

Facilities

Toilets (dry toilets used only by residents), sun-bathing area, kiosk, parking area.

Risks

Debris such as wood, leaves and other organic material may be deposited due to varying water levels. No known risk from cyanobacteria, macrophytes, filamentous algae, bird faeces, or cercariae.
