The Hohenwarte Reservoir is a popular recreational area in the heart of Thuringia. The dammed Saale River winds for 27 kilometres through a fjord-like landscape within a valley up to 1 kilometre wide, containing approximately 182 million cubic metres of water. The Hohenwarte Reservoir forms part of the 79.8-kilometre-long Saale Cascade. The CP Schäferwiese site is located at the end of the eastern side of the Lothabucht and consists of a bungalow settlement that is not publicly accessible. No public facilities are available at this location.

Water

Reservoir with a surface area of 7.6 square kilometres. Maximum water depth is 68 metres. Elevation of mean water level is 298 metres above sea level. Ecological status class is very good (ÖKZ 1), oligotrophic. The water body has surface inflow and experiences water renewal. The beach is steep and reaches considerable depth. Shoreline composition includes rock, stone, and grass areas.

Location

Reached via Saalfeld in the direction of Kaulsdorf-Hohenwarte–Drognitz. Access is by an unpaved, steeply descending road. No signposts indicate the location. A parking area is available.

Facilities

Toilets, picnic areas (Liegewiesen), kiosk, parking area. The dry toilets present are used only by local residents.

Ecological status class ÖKZ 1 (very good), oligotrophic trophic level. No specific water quality monitoring results are detailed in this profile document.
