Holmens Camping Strand is a private sandy beach located on Gudensø lake near Ry in central Jutland, Denmark. The beach is approximately 48 meters long and 5 meters wide, accessible only to camping guests. The water is very shallow and unsuitable for diving from the bathing pier. The lake is classified as excellent quality based on bathing water analyses from 2006-2009, with over 95% of samples showing E. coli below 500 and enterococci below 200.

Water

Gudensø is a freshwater lake in the central Jutland lake highlands, part of the Gudenå river system. The lake is shallow, calcareous, and non-brown-water. The lake bottom at the beach consists predominantly of sand and scattered stones.

Location

Located west of Ry town at Klostervej, approximately 2 kilometers from Ry city centre, near Gudensø lake. The beach is privately owned by Holmens Camping and accessible only to camping guests via a forest road.

Facilities

Bathing pier, boat dock used for canoe and kayak storage, lifebuoy (Tryg brand), tables and benches, waste container, boat rentals available.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent, the highest classification under Danish bathing water regulations. Over 95% of analyses from 2006-2009 showed E. coli below 500 and enterococci below 200. Summer water temperature ranges from 14-23 degrees Celsius. The lake has poor ecological condition overall.

Risks

Algal blooms and blue-green algae are recurring problems in the lake during warm periods with high temperatures. The lake faces moderate risk of blue-green algae blooms causing foam formation and surface blooms. The invasive zebra mussel has been present in the Gudenå system since 2006. Potential pollution sources include sewage overflows during heavy rainfall, scattered building discharges, septic tank issues, and manure spills.
