Ravnsø is a lake in central Jutland with two official bathing beaches: one at Ravnsø Spejdercenter on the north shore and one at Jaungyde (Ravnsøvej) on the east shore. The Spejdercenter beach is approximately 6 metres long and 1 metre wide, surrounded by forest. The Jaungyde beach is approximately 15 metres long with a 7-metre-wide grassed recreation area behind it. Both beaches have very shallow water with sandy bottoms. The lake has been classified as excellent water quality, the highest classification possible.

Water

Ravnsø is a freshwater lake with an area of 191 hectares, measuring 2.6 kilometres long and 0.4 to 0.9 kilometres wide. Maximum depth is 29 metres with an average depth of 13.4 metres. Summer water temperature ranges from 14 to 22 degrees Celsius. Visibility depth exceeds 1 metre during the bathing season. The lake is part of the Gudenå system and lies in the main water basin for Randers Fjord. It is categorized as lake type 10: calcareous, non-brown water, fresh, deep.

Location

Ravnsø is located in central Jutland in Skanderborg Municipality. Ravnsø Spejdercenter is accessed via a longer gravel road (Hyllingvej) through forest on the north side of the lake. Jaungyde (Ravnsøvej) beach is accessed via a smaller path from Ravnsøvej on the east side of the lake.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as excellent, the best classification possible. Over 95 percent of bathing water analyses show values below 500 for E. coli and below 200 for Enterococci. The lake has good ecological status and meets environmental targets for 2015. Fecal contamination risks from overflow events or dispersed settlements are not considered significant.

Risks

Algal blooms and cyanobacteria blooms are recurring problems, particularly in summer months. Cyanobacteria blooms occur annually with varying intensity and carry moderate risk. The toxic cyanobacterium Anabaena lemmermannii causes many blooms; dead fish, birds, and poisoned dogs have been observed. Cyanobacteria toxins can cause diarrhoea, headache, skin irritation, fever, and nausea, particularly in children, immunocompromised persons, and allergy sufferers. Blooms typically occur in late summer following rainfall and warm, calm, sunny weather.
